Patented Pull-Pierce Technology
One of the most important features that sets Byrna handheld launchers apart is the patented pull-pierce technology. This system allows the launcher to puncture the CO2 cylinder and fire a projectile on the very first trigger pull.
Why this matters
Most CO2-powered launchers pierce the cylinder when it is installed. Once pierced, CO2 begins to leak and will typically discharge within 24 to 48 hours. This creates a tradeoff between being ready and preserving CO2.
Byrna eliminates this problem. Because the CO2 cylinder is not punctured until the trigger is pulled:
- The launcher can remain loaded for extended periods
- It will still be ready to fire immediately when needed
This ensures consistent readiness without sacrificing reliability.
Platform Differences

Installing the CO2 Cylinder
Pistols Only (HD, SD, LE, LE Gen 2, CL, CLXL)
- Set the launcher safety to SAFE (if equipped,) remove the magazine, and ensure the breech is clear
- Point in a safe direction
- Remove the CO2 cap using the tool in the magazine base
- Insert a new CO2 cylinder
- Push the cylinder firmly to the back of the chamber
- Skipping this step can cause leaks after puncture
- Begin threading the cap by hand
- Tighten using the tool until resistance is felt
- Tighten an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn
Pistols CO2 Removal (HD, SD, LE, LE Gen 2, CL, CLXL)
- Set the launcher to SAFE, remove the magazine, and confirm the breech is clear
- Point in a safe direction
Slowly loosen the CO2 cap using the tool
- Turn only until you hear a slight seep of CO2
- Stop turning and allow the gas to gradually release
Important:
Do not rapidly unscrew the cap to release CO2 all at once- Sudden depressurization can damage internal seals over time
- Once all gas has safely vented, fully remove the CO2 cap
- Remove the used CO2 cylinder
- Reinstall the CO2 cap
TCR Rifle CO2 Installation
A. Put the safety in SAFE mode
B. Open the left-side Picatinny rail CO2 access door
C. If needed, point the muzzle downward to clear any existing cylinder
D. Tilt left and raise the muzzle to remove the cylinder
E. Clean the small end of a new 12g CO2 cylinder
F. Insert the cylinder in the correct orientation
G. Close the CO2 access door
TCR Rifle CO2 Removal

A. Wear eye protection and point in a safe direction
B. Open the access door
C. Tilt and angle the launcher to remove the cylinder
D. Assist removal if necessary
E. Close the access door
Removing a used (punctured) cylinder
A. Wear eye protection and point in a safe direction
B. Important:
Do not attempt to open the CO2 access door or remove the cylinder until all CO2 has been completely discharged
- Attempting to remove a cylinder that still contains CO2 can damage the launcher
C. Fire until all CO2 is fully discharged
D. Open the access door
E. Tilt and remove the empty cylinder
F. Close the access door
Mission 4 Rifle CO2 Installation
A. Set safety to SAFE and turn CO2 valve OFF
B. Remove magazine and confirm the breech is clear
C. Point in a safe direction and cock the launcher
D. Lubricate the CO2 cylinder O-ring
E. Insert the CO2 cylinder into the rear of the launcher
F. Twist clockwise until fully seated and pierced
G. Install and secure the buttstock using the provided hex key
- Do not overtighten
Mission 4 Rifle CO2 Removal
A. Review safety warnings and wear eye protection
B. Unload the launcher
C. Cock the launcher, switch CO2 valve ON, and set to FIRE
D. Discharge all remaining gas
E. Remove the buttstock using the hex key
F. Remove the CO2 cylinder
G. Fire again in a safe direction to confirm all gas is released
CO2 Performance and Capacity
- CO2 cylinders have a virtually indefinite shelf life prior to use
8g CO2:
- Up to 22 shots in SD. HD, and EP
- Up to 15 shots in CL
12g CO2:
- Up to 17 shots in LE
- Up to 17 shots in CL XL
- Up to 25 to 30 shots in SD. HD, and EP with Boost Adapter installed
Once punctured:
- CO2 will gradually leak over about 24 to 48 hours
- Replace the cylinder after extended use

Oiler Cylinders and Maintenance
Each 10-pack of Byrna CO2 cylinders includes one oiler cylinder.
- Contains CO2 and lubricant
- Oil cylinders are labeled "OIL" and may be placed in the packaging in the opposite direction for identification
